5/21/2023 0 Comments Digger by Ursula Vernon![]() ![]() This tale manages to be both serious and light-hearted: it explores complex themes of honor, responsibility, and the gray areas between right and wrong, but it does so with a frequent application of humor, wit, and absurdity that makes the journey fun. ![]() Thrust into the middle of a puzzling and often perilous situation involving gods, demons, destiny, and redemption, she finds her way based on a pragmatic honesty and the sincere belief in doing the right thing. The story of a wombat on an incredible journey of discovery Kurt Busiek calls utterly charming with a delightful (and refreshingly practical) hero.ĭigger Unearthed is the story of a shrewd, sensible wombat engineer named Digger-of-unnecessarily-convoluted-tunnels, who finds herself stranded in a fantasy world that is far from logical. ![]() ![]() ![]() Andy describes it as “simple, dramatic, effortless,” but it sounds like something one might use to unblock a toilet. There are a number of problems with this setup, one being that Andy apparently managed to survive for a decade in New York City by working as a “contributing editor writing for a wedding blog.” But more troublesome is the name of the magazine, The Plunge. “Revenge” is set 10 years later, and Andy is now editor-in-chief and part-owner of a hit bridal magazine she launched with her former Runway coworker Emily. (Full disclosure: I spent the summer of 2008 as an editorial intern at Vogue, where I was sent to Starbucks a gazillion times a day but suffered no worse ignominy than being forced to confess to a fashion editor that my dress was purchased at Target.) ![]() The reader is tempted to assume that Weisberger had dollar signs in her eyes, rather than inspiration, when she wrote it. But unfortunately this second outing reads less like haute couture and more like Nordstrom Rack. Andy is back in this sequel, “Revenge Wears Prada,” pitted once again against her former boss, Miranda Priestly (based on the immaculately bobbed Vogue editor Anna Wintour). What “The Devil Wears Prada” lacked in writerly polish, it made up for with fascinating characters and a brutally, sometimes hilariously honest look at the fashion publishing industry and its quirks. “Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns” by Lauren Weisberger. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle![]() ![]() ![]() Tolle’s first chapter, “You Are Not Your Mind,” introduces readers to his argument that negative feelings and actions are the result of over-identifying with one’s mind. He then explains that the book will explore the difference between the ego and the “true nature” and show readers how to change their mindsets and experience inner peace. Tolle argues that his extreme emotional pain and psychological distress “must have forced my consciousness to withdraw from its identification with the unhappy and deeply fearful self,” leaving him with only his “true nature” and his inherent contentedness (5). The next day, he woke up with a new appreciation for everything around him, which felt “fresh and pristine” (4). Tolle felt himself drawn into a “void” within him and felt his fear dissolve. He remembers being severely anxious and depressed in his 20s, which culminated in a transformative experience at the age of 29. In the Introduction, Tolle shares the personal backstory of his revelation about the ego and the true self. While he feels that his book was generally positively received, he also responds to criticisms of his work, commenting that it will naturally prompt “egoic reaction, resistance, and attack” (169). In the Preface, written six years after the book’s original publication date, Tolle reflects on his book’s rise to fame and shares that many readers reached out to him with messages about how his work changed their lives. ![]() Content Warning: This guide mentions suicidal ideation. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Odd and the frost giants review![]() It is good for the children to read this book. There was lots of characters in the book, so it sometimes confuses me. , this enjoyable story should appeal to Gaiman's younger fans. It is a good book, it has a good plot and good characters, and I liked the idea that the gods are animals living on earth Helpful LWN0 Teen, 14 years old Februage 9+ good book I think this book is pretty good and fun. The gods and the giant, though powerful, come across as self-involved and vaguely simpleminded, clearly in need of a resourceful young fellow like Odd to help set things straight. He begins by providing conventional pages, although often with baroque touches, but by the end of this collection he’s begun using the ornate vertical page edgings that would come to characterise the series. While the concept is enticing, it needed the application of Willingham’s creativity and page-turning plots, and the phenomenal appeal of Mark Buckingham’s decorative art. The Fables refer to themselves as such, with those who can pass for human living in an area of Manhattan called Fabletown, protected from prying human eyes with magical spells, while the assorted animals who’re unable to change their form live on an equally protected farm in New York state. Why are they here? Well, they’ve been exiled from what they refer to as the Homelands, which one by one were over-run by the mysterious Adversary. Fables is Bill Willingham’s phenomenally simple, yet brilliant idea of transferring the characters we all know from fairy tales and nursery rhymes to the real world of the early 21 st century. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments Wyn by lily mayne![]() ![]() Danny is mine. For the first time in my unfathomably long life, I know what it means to want another so much that the thought of losing him threatens to ruin me. The consequences of Anne's rise to power and eventual demise are felt well beyond the inner circle of the court. Anne's ascent to the throne elevates her from lady-in-waiting to the highest position a woman could attain, but her life spirals out of control when Henry is driven to desperate acts of betrayal and violence. Against common sense and the urgings of his most trusted advisors, Henry defied all, blindly following his passion for Anne, using the power he held over the bodies and souls of all who reside in his realm and beyond. "All eyes and hair," a courtier had said disparagingly of her, but when King Henry VIII fell for young Anne, nothing could keep him from what he desired. ![]() The king first noticed Anne Boleyn as a heartbroken sixteen-year-old, sullen and beautiful after a thwarted romance with the son of the Earl of Northumberland.
